What the #&*! are you doing?

If there’s one thing that’s true about humans, it’s that as soon as they develop a new technology, they’ll figure out a way to use it for anything other than its intended purpose. Because it’s fun to break something as soon as you’ve mastered the proper use of it.

It was only a matter of time before someone came up with something as ingenious as CurseBird, the site that wants to know: “What the f#@! is everyone swearing about?” This page, the brainchild of Richard Henry, pops the bird at Twitter, and this irreverent spinoff turns the spotlight on our digital potty mouths with both a clever concept and superior technology. It deliberately feeds on profanity coming through from Twitter and streams it before your very eyes, with handy statistics on the most popular curse words. (The F word is the clear leader. Like Internet Explorer users, F-bombers don’t seem to realize there are more creative alternatives available.)

For cussing connoisseurs, it’s a stream of verbal sewage that testifies to human impatience, immaturity, and the soothing hum of collective griping. Technologically, I’m impressed because this Twitter mashup is even better than the original. I hate having to refresh the page to see new tweets, but don’t want to bother with a separate client. I like the steady stream of angry outbursts, and the ambient stats at the top of the page are handy. I wish some of that tech could be applied to my own Twitter stream.

It’s a delicious combination — the limitless capacity of human beings to be creative and disgusting. Bravo, Mr. Henry. Bravo.
