Fiction is Obsolete
Truth really is stranger than fiction — no doubt about that. The problem is that before we had the Internet, we couldn’t get to most of the truth so we had to come up with the fiction. But now, fictional entertainment is largely obsolete, thanks to the new ability the world has to document human stupidity or how absurd everyday life can be. YouTube is the great repository of this kind of content. My favorite videos involve the bizarre clash of twenty-first technology and really crappy third world nations. Why on earth do I need to watch cartoons when there is stuff like this:
I wouldn’t have believed this unless I saw it. And it’s beautiful. Here we have someone with a digital camera . . . who gets around on a camel. Even better than that is the sound the camels are making. That’s the sound my soul makes every time Intern Marcie asks me a stupid question and it takes every failsafe I have to keep from blasting her with my plasma cannon.
Anyway. We don’t need made-up funny anymore. The all-seeing eye of YouTube lets us enjoy the absurdity of truth.
